About
Mentors
Learn about mentoring with FIRST Team 1741 Red Alert Robotics.
Our Mentors
Red Alert Robotics is guided by a dedicated group of adult mentors — engineers, teachers, business professionals, and community members — who volunteer their time to help students learn, grow, and succeed. Our mentors don’t do the work for students; they empower students to do the work themselves.
Mentors are the backbone of every FIRST team. They bring real-world expertise into the shop and classroom, helping students develop technical skills, professional habits, and the confidence to tackle complex challenges.
What Mentors Do
Teach & Guide
Share professional knowledge in engineering, programming, business, and more. Help students learn by doing — not by watching.
Ensure Safety
Maintain a safe environment in the shop and at competitions. Supervise the use of power tools, machinery, and electrical systems.
Inspire Growth
Encourage students to push beyond their comfort zones, develop leadership skills, and discover passions in STEM fields.
Build Community
Foster a positive team culture based on FIRST's values of Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition®.
Why Mentor?
Mentoring with an FRC team is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences you can have. Here’s what our mentors say keeps them coming back:
- 🔧 Make a real impact — Watch students grow from beginners to confident engineers, programmers, and leaders.
- 🎓 Give back — Share the expertise you’ve built over your career with the next generation.
- 🤝 Join a community — Connect with other professionals who are passionate about STEM education.
- 🏆 Experience competition — There’s nothing quite like the energy of a FIRST event. It’s the “hardest fun you’ll ever have.”
- 💡 Keep learning — Mentoring challenges you too. Students bring fresh perspectives and creative solutions that inspire everyone.
Become a Mentor
We’re always looking for new mentors! You don’t need to be an engineer — we need people with skills in:
- Engineering & Manufacturing — Mechanical, electrical, and systems design
- Software Development — Java, Python, computer vision, embedded systems
- Business & Marketing — Fundraising, branding, social media, and project management
- Graphic Design & Media — Photography, videography, and visual design
- General Support — Organization, logistics, meal coordination, and encouragement
All mentors must pass a background check and complete FIRST’s Youth Protection Policy training.
